Is it true we need less sleep as we age?

A lot of my friends told me that they are sleeping less as they age. Though they sleep at the same time, now they do not have problems waking up at 6am in the morning. Long gone were the days when they need to sleep till late and cannot get out of bed.

I wonder why this happens? Is it because we have less worries as we age and hence, have a more peaceful sleep at night? Then, we do not need to sleep that much. Or is it because we are programmed that way whereby we have enough time to wake up and enjoy the morning sun.
